Sunbeam Residential Developmental Centre Workers Demonstrate as Negotiations Break Down

KITCHENER, ON, April 29 /CNW/ - CAW members employed at Sunbeam
Residential Centre in Kitchener will be staging a demonstration outside of the
main building of the centre tomorrow Thursday, April 30, expressing
frustration at the breakdown in negotiations for a new collective agreement.
The 130 workers are represented by CAW Local 1106. The demonstration will
take place from 2:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. at 2749 Kingsway Drive in Kitchener.
Workers at Sunbeam Residential Development Centre provide residential
care and day programming for developmentally challenged individuals with
physical & emotional impairments in Waterloo Region.
Negotiations have broken down after Sunbeam management has repeatedly
attempted to shift more administrative tasks onto the workers who are
responsible for the direct care of clients. CAW National Representative Bill
Gibson said this practice is becoming all too commonplace at the centre and
could potentially put the clients at risk, a fear many of the workers share.
Negotiations have been ongoing since January. The current contract
expired on March 31.
