TORONTO, Jan. 15 /CNW/ - The York Federation of Students (YFS) and the
York University Graduate Students' Association (GSA) are deeply concerned
after being informed of yet another sexual assault on the Keele Campus of York
"It is clear from this incident that the York Administration needs to do
more to address the systemic issues of sexual assault and violence on this

the third reported incident of sexual assault to take place at York University
over the past five months.
As members of the Canadian Federation of Students the YFS and GSA have
been promoting the "No-Means-No" anti-date rape campaign to raise awareness
and end violence against women. The YFS and the GSA have also been lobbying
the York Administration to conduct a campus-wide safety audit designed to
identify existing structural and systemic causes of violence at York
"We have been proposing the use of an organization called METRAC," said
Kelly Holloway, President of the York University Graduate Students'
Association. "METRAC works with university campuses to prevent violence
through community safety initiatives, public education, training and
To date, the York Administration has not made a formal commitment to
utilize the services of METRAC.
"If this university is committed to ensuring student safety it is
imperative that they take advantage of the services of a professional
organization such as METRAC, that has been conducting community safety audits
in Ontario for the past twenty-five years," said Massa. "Students on this
campus cannot afford to have the York Administration drag its feet on this
issue any longer."
