Students are ready to vote in advance polls located at Ontario college and university campuses

TORONTO, Sept. 28, 2011 /CNW/ - Today, for the first time in Ontario's history, advance polls will be set up on nearly all college and university campuses. Students have been lobbying and working with Elections Ontario for close to a decade to make improvements to the voting system to make it easier for students to vote, including the establishment of on-campus polling stations.

"This is the third election where students and staff at Elections Ontario have been working together to improve student access to poll stations," said Sandy Hudson, Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario. "Establishing advance and regular polls on Oct. 6 at almost every college and university in Ontario is victory for students that will hopefully pay off with increased student engagement in this election."

All but one university campus will have an advance poll where students can vote before and on October 6. Elections Ontario was also able to secure 25 of the 27 spaces that it had originally confirmed on college campuses for advance polls before they were moved due to the college support worker strike in early September. "Students often find themselves on campus from early morning to late at night and have a hard time getting to a poll station on voting day," said Hudson. "Providing students the opportunity to vote on campus over several days is a great improvement to the electoral process and we look forward to continue working closely with Elections Ontario to improve student voter turn-out."
