TORONTO, Oct. 10 /CNW/ - More than 275,000 elementary and secondary
students from every electoral district participated in Student Vote Ontario.
257,000 valid votes were submitted in the parallel election and 185,000
valid votes were also cast in the parallel referendum.
Results will be available at 9pm at www.studentvote.ca.
Taylor Gunn, Chief Election Officer: "These appear to be the most
interesting Student Vote results we have released in the history of our
program. Ontario students are predicting a dramatically different electoral
map then when we entered this campaign. Student Vote would like to thank the
incredible teachers in elementary and high schools throughout the province
that are responsible for engaging their students in this election."
More than 1600 schools submitted results by the deadline and late results
will be compiled in the coming days. Final tallies will be available on the
website by early next week.
The feedback from teachers has been remarkable across the province.
Participating teacher, R. L. Hyslop School: 'This has been an incredible
experience for my grade 5 students! The Student Vote process has engaged their
interest throughout, and the discussions over FPTP and MMP were lively. From
the comments made by the students, I have learned that a few of their parents
voted at the advanced pools...and the rest are determined to get their parents
out to vote. If for no other reason that that, I would deem the Student Vote
program to be a great success.'
Student Vote was founded in 2003 by Taylor Gunn and Lindsay Mazzucco in
2003. Nearly 1.5 million students across Canada have participated through 6
parallel election programs.
