Société du parc Jean-Drapeau seeks union's cooperation so event can take
place in safe, festive environment
MONTREAL, Jan. 11 /CNW Telbec/ -Faced with a strike notice and deadlocked
negotiations, Société du parc Jean-Drapeau (SPJD) yesterday requested the
cooperation of the Syndicat des cols bleus regroupés de Montréal (SCFP, local
301) so that no pressure tactics are applied during preparations for the Fête
des Neiges and the festival itself. The SPJD made this request in order to
ensure families that the event would be held in a safe and festive atmosphere.
If a firm written commitment is not obtained by noon on January 14, the SPJD
will be forced to cancel the Fête des Neiges.
"We realize that cancellation of this event would deprive Montreal
families of a highly popular event, but with the threat of a strike and risks
to the safety of people and premises, we must act as responsible managers.
Once this deadline has passed, we will not be ready in time nor will we be
able to provide a safe environment for the large numbers of participants, a
great many of whom are children," said Kevin Donnelly, SPJD spokesperson.
Société du parc Jean-Drapeau has a mandate to manage and develop Parc
Jean-Drapeau, maintain relations with partners, conserve, protect and develop
green and blue spaces, and maintain and preserve buildings, equipment and
public works of art. SPJD is managed by a seven-member board of directors
representing primarily the business community.
