Statement by the Canadian Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan on recent violence in Afghanistan

KABUL, June 17 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Ambassador to the Islamic
Republic of Afghanistan, Arif Lalani, today made the following statement on
recent violence in and around Kabul, Afghanistan:
"Canada, as a responsible member of the international community, is
committed to the vision of a stable, democratic and economically viable
Afghanistan. Those who reject that vision will stop at nothing to try to
thwart the efforts of the Afghan people and the international community to
realize it.
"I condemn, in the strongest terms, the recent violence against students
and teachers, police trainers and journalists. These attacks have targeted the
symbols of progress in Afghanistan in the areas of education, the rule of law
and free expression, all of which are key to transforming the lives of the
Afghan people. In carrying out such acts of violence against unarmed
civilians, including innocent schoolgirls, the perpetrators of these attacks
demonstrate their own cowardice and desperation in the face of progress.
"Today's attack on police trainers is an attempt to undermine work to
reform and professionalize the Afghan police system, which is central to
re-establishing and extending the rule of law throughout Afghanistan.
"Canada will not be deterred by such acts, and remains committed to
contributing to the achievement of the effective police service called for in
the Afghanistan Compact. As announced by the Prime Minister on June 4, 2007,
Canada is participating in the EU Police Mission (EUPOL), which was formally
launched today. EUPOL will help to extend the rule of law by deploying police
and justice sector experts to provide training and mentoring to Afghan police
officers nationwide."
