OTTAWA, Oct. 30 /CNW Telbec/ - The following is a statement from FCM
President Jean Perrault, Mayor of Sherbrooke, on the new federal cabinet:
"On behalf of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, I would like to
extend my congratulations to Prime Minister Stephen Harper on the appointment
of his new cabinet, and to all new and returning ministers. We look forward to
strengthening the positive relationship that has been built between FCM and
the Government of Canada.
In particular, we are encouraged by the appointment of the Honourable
John Baird as the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. Few
cabinet positions have more power to improve the daily lives of Canadians.
Working with municipalities and the provinces/territories, the Minister
can take action that delivers concrete improvements in the roads, sewers,
public transit and water systems that Canadians need to get to work, raise
their families and run their businesses.
Minister Baird assumes this important position at a critical moment for
the country. As an economic downturn looms, infrastructure investments are the
most effective stimulus tool available to the federal government. The new
minister is uniquely positioned to help boost employment and fight a
What is needed now is quick, decisive action that gets federal
infrastructure funding quickly to the communities where Canadians live and
work. Minister Baird has the experience, knowledge, and results-driven
philosophy to meet this challenge. We are confident he will move quickly in
working with officials and the Cabinet Committee on Economic Growth and
Long-Term Prosperity to make the immediate investments that the country needs
and that Canadians are anticipating.
When Canada emerges from this period of economic uncertainty, the legacy
of today's investments can and must live on as a down payment on a long-term
plan to eliminate the $123-billion municipal infrastructure deficit.
As we congratulate Minister Baird, we also want to thank his predecessor.
Minister Lawrence Cannon oversaw a new generation of federal infrastructure
programs and was a constructive partner for Canada's cities and communities.
We look forward to working with Minister Baird to build on those achievements
and invest in healthy cities and communities within a strong Canada."
