Statement - Minister Rickford Applauds the Acceptance of the Fuel Quality Directive by the European Parliament

Canada Encourages Cooperation on Effective, Meaningful, Science-Based Environmental Measures

CALGARY, Feb. 6, 2015 /CNW/ - The Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today issued a statement supporting the acceptance today of the European Union Fuel Quality Directive (FQD) in the European Parliament. The Directive is a science- and fact-based measure that will reduce emissions from transportation fuels and builds on the long-standing energy partnership between Canada and the EU.

"Canada is a secure and reliable supplier of energy that is making a growing contribution to global energy security. Today's outcome once again demonstrates that Canada is respected globally as a responsible energy producer and supplier to the world.

"Our government supports the European Union Commission's objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and welcomes today's science- and fact-based outcome.

"The final Directive builds on our long-standing partnership with the EU and positions Canada to enhance its status an important energy source, now and in the future. For example, Canadian crudes accounted for 4.5 percent of Italy's crude imports in the first half of 2014.

"Canadians can count on their government to promote Canadian interests, jobs and the economy. Any measure that provides a separate, more onerous treatment for oil sands crude relative to other crude with similar or higher GHG emissions intensities is discriminatory."
