A large majority of STAPLES stores across Canada are turning out their
lights to help reduce the consumption of electricity
RICHMOND HILL, ON, May 28 /CNW/ - Effective June 1, Staples will reduce
the lighting in many of its stores as part of the 'Lights Out' program. The
reduction will occur during daylight hours only and ends July 30. The
'Lights-Out' program will significantly save energy by reducing the heat load
in buildings, making it easier for the heating, ventilation and air
conditioning (HVAC) systems to keep buildings cool.
"This is an easy way of reducing consumption in peak summer months.
Sustainability is important to us," says Leigh Pearson, facilities manager for
The program, initially launched in 2007, has seen much success. Last
year, the retailer managed to reduce 911,317 kilowatts of power in more than
130 stores. That amounts to a reduction of over 200 metric tonnes in
greenhouse gas emissions. "Those numbers are equal to planting over 45,000
trees. It shows that when retailers and consumers do their part for the
environment, positive changes can happen," continued Pearson.
STAPLES Canada not only runs the 'Lights Out' program, but also operates
other environmentally conscious programs such as 'Recycle For Education.'
Stores also collect and recycle used batteries and cellphones, reduces
packaging of products to stores, and sells Eco-Easy products-identified with
the Eco-Easy logo for easy, sustainable choices.
