TORONTO, March 28 /CNW/ - On Saturday, March 29 at 8:00 pm, STAPLES
Business Depot locations across Canada will reduce lighting for one hour in
support of Earth Hour 2008, a global initiative organized by World Wildlife
For just one hour, Earth Hour, the world will turn off its lights to show
their support for taking action on climate change. In support of this event, a
large majority of STAPLES Business Depot/Bureau en Gros store locations will
be turning off their non-essential internal lighting and exterior signage
"Earth Hour is an opportunity for all individuals, households and
businesses to send a very powerful message," says Steve Matyas, President
STAPLES Business Depot. "Through our community@work program, STAPLES Business
Depot is proud to participate on a national level in Earth Hour 2008."
Earth Hour 2008 is only one of the ways STAPLES Business Depot reduces
its environmental footprint. STAPLES Business Depot is committed to three
sustainability and socially responsible goals:
1. to be a leader in environmental products both internally and for
2. to conserve the amount of energy used; and,
3. to provide easy recycling solutions for customers.
Last summer, STAPLES Business Depot launched the 'Lights Out Program.'
For July and August, 148 store locations minimized their non-essential
lighting. The 'Lights Out Program' significantly saved energy by reducing the
heat load and making it easier for the heating, ventilating and air
conditioning (HVAC) systems to keep buildings cool. Overall the program
reduced energy in stores by 300KW per day for 76 days, which means 22,800KW
per store. For only 148 stores, 3,374,400KW was conserved for the duration of
the program. This coming summer, STAPLES Business Depot will run the program
again with the participation of more store locations.
In 2007, STAPLES Business Depot made a corporate wide commitment to
operate all store locations efficiently by adding an Energy Management System.
An exterior lighting retrofit has been completed in over 50 locations,
reducing the number of fixtures and replacing them with an energy-efficient
