TORONTO, May 27 /CNW/ - Maureen Labrecque, Jo-Ann Mancini and Debbie
Cameron of Buttercup Preschool in Brampton will receive Fire Safety Awards
from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council at a ceremony on June 3,
2009 in Toronto. The annual Fire Safety Awards recognize outstanding
contributions to fire protection and prevention in Ontario.
After a number of years working at the preschool, Labrecque, Mancini and
Cameron have developed a strong partnership with Brampton Fire and Emergency
Services. As part of this association, in the last few years they have taught
children lessons from the fire safety program Learn Not to Burn in their
pre-school classes. In fact, one of the children who attended the pre-school
was able to demonstrate the skills he had learned from the three women in an
actual emergency situation.
"By teaching children about fire safety at this young age, these three
women are providing children with a solid foundation for fire safety in the
future," said Ontario Fire Marshal Pat Burke. "Having a child who has
demonstrated his skills from this program goes a long way toward showing how
effective these teachings can be in actual situations."
Fire departments throughout the province nominated individuals and
organizations for this year's awards; 20 recipients were selected. The
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Rick Bartolucci and
Fire Marshal Burke will present the awards at a luncheon ceremony at the
Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto.
