TORONTO, March 20 /CNW/ - St Michael's Hospital is pleased with the
federal government's budget to make Canada a global leader in research,
development and innovation.
Canada's Finance Minister, the Honourable Jim Flaherty, presented the
Harper government's budget ASPIRE, which recognized the importance of funding
Canadian research. Budget 2007 is providing $105 million in 2007-08 to support
the operations of leading Canadian health sciences centres of excellence.
"We are pleased with the federal government's commitment of $15 million
for the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael's Hospital, a research
and education facility that is internationally unique, consisting of the
Keenan Research Centre and the Li Ka Shing International Centre in Health Care
Education," said president and CEO of St. Michael's Hospital Jeff Lozon.
"We must continue to invest in research and international collaborations.
St Michael's Hospital is embarking on becoming a world leader in knowledge
transfer with our Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute. We are grateful for the
federal government's support which adds to our provincial and private sector
commitments," added Lozon.
The value of centres of excellence, like St. Michael's Hospital's
Knowledge Institute, is highest where there is a co-ordinated approach that
brings together research institutions, governments and the private sector to
set priorities and share resources.
With yesterday's budget, Canada's federal government has demonstrated
that it is prepared to invest in a partnership with other levels of government
and the private sector to create centres that operate at international
standards of excellence and put knowledge to work for the social and economic
benefits of Canadians.
The commitment to furthering innovation in academic health centres will
accelerate medical research and economic growth with programs focussed on
translating knowledge into better health care for all. To this end,
St. Michael's Hospital's is dedicated to providing lifesaving and
life-enhancing health research that will impact healthcare globally.
St. Michael's Hospital is now leading the charge in innovation and we are
looking forward to continuing to work with all levels of government to improve
quality care and impact thousands of lives globally.
