TORONTO, Sept. 29, 2011 /CNW/ - As a country, we are often defined by our passion for sports. But there hasn't been a national magazine to reflect our uniquely Canadian relationship to the sports we love. Until today.

Canada's first and only national bi-weekly sports magazine, Sportsnet, tells the stories that reflect the passions of millions of Canadians—the ones who cram into arenas and stadiums across the country, and who make sure they're home in time to watch the big game.

"Canadians told us they want a sports magazine that reflects our stories, our icons and our heroes," says Sportsnet editor-in-chief Steve Maich. "They told us they want photography that will make them stop and stare, stories that will make them pause and think. That's what we're committed to delivering, starting today, for 26 issues a year."

The launch of Sportsnet magazine brings the number of Sportsnet brand platforms to five: television, radio, digital, mobile and now print. The debut issue is also part of a change of direction for the entire Sportsnet family—a new look and a renewed focus on what fuels the Canadian fan.

Through the printed word and compelling visuals, Sportsnet aims to become Canada's leading source of in-depth perspective, insider reports, and exclusive insight on the world of sports, including hockey, baseball, football, soccer and other professional and premium amateur sports.

Fittingly, the inaugural issue targets the icons most near and dear to the collective hearts of Canadians: hockey players. The cover story by Gare Joyce focuses on the future of Sidney Crosby; Inside, a 35-page National Hockey League section previews the 2011-12 season; an investigative piece looks at the story behind the sudden and tragic death of NHL enforcer Derek Boogaard; and a feature story written by Sportsnet.ca senior columnist Mark Spector takes readers inside the Canucks' dressing room after the crushing Game 7 loss to the Boston Bruins last spring.

Every issue of Sportsnet will include:

  • Gallery - Multi-page spreads of the most amazing images captured on the field of play
  • Uncompromising Views — Bob McCown answers letters and questions from our readers. Jim Lang and Greg Brady debate the hottest topics in sports. Scott Feschuk examines the absurdities of our pro sports culture. Stephen Brunt gives us his "final say" on the back page
  • Pre-Game - A guide to the biggest games and most intriguing match-ups of the next two weeks in sports
  • The Show - A bite-size deconstruction of the past two weeks in sports
  • Road Trip - A travelers' guide to the greatest road trips you've always dreamed of taking. Where to eat, where to stay, and how to get tickets to the game
  • The Fan - A profile of a fan of special devotion, from among the people who make pro sports work, the people in the stands
  • Science of Sport - An examination of the physics, biology and biomechanics that make amazing plays possible
  • Game Changer - Profiles of the innovators who changed the way the game is played
  • The Life - A view of all the sports action that happens away from the field

The inaugural issue also includes a Major League Baseball post-season preview by baseball insider Shi Davidi and an exclusive sit-down with Canadian basketball phenom Tristan Thompson, written by Michael Grange.

Sportsnet magazine launches with a circulation of 100,000. To subscribe to the print or iPad versions, visit http://www.sportsnet.ca/magazine href="http://www.sportsnet.ca/magazine">/www.sportsnet.ca/magazine>
