Upcoming Events for Day 3 July 10

  • Day 3 of the Games will feature competition in all sports except powerlifting and rhythmic gymnastics.
  • Divisioning for soccer, softball and bocce continues in the morning followed by round-robin play in the afternoon. Divisioning races for swimming continue in the morning followed by final races in the evening at the UBC Aquatic Centre.
  • Doubles competition for 10-pin bowling takes place in Richmond at The Zone Bowling Centre.

Highlights from Day 2 July 9

  • Provincial record broken in powerlifting (squat) for Team Newfoundland and Labrador – 275.5 kgs or 607 lbs.
  • Jake Gardiner, defense for the Toronto Maple Leafs, showed his soccer skills on the pitch with a few soccer athletes from Team Ontario.
  • A day of divisioning to seed athletes and teams for competition rounds, which begin July 10.

Interesting Facts

  • 5-pin bowling is Special Olympics Canada's most popular sport with 13,514 athletes.
  • For athletics competitors, this will be the first time the 10,000-metre race is offered at National Games.
  • Since the 2010/11 program year basketball has grown by 1,700 athletes, or more than 50%.

Did You Know?

  • The Games will be a bottled-water free event and each athlete will receive a reusable bottle and access to plenty of water refill stations at all sports venues.


  • All athletes have a Sustainability Passport and will earn stamps for making sustainable choices throughout the Games from getting to events by foot, to drinking tap water, to joining in the camaraderie of the Games. 
  • Wednesday was Water Day, athletes and spectators were invited to participate in a bottled water vs. tap water taste test at the Sustainability booth in the Festival Lounge.
  • Thursday is Accessibility Day where athletes and spectators will participate in an accessibility obstacle course at the Sustainability booth at the Festival Lounge.

The Special Olympics Canada 2014 Summer Games are taking place in Vancouver, British Columbia from July 8 to 12, 2014, featuring over 2,000 athletes, coaches and officials, in 11 sports.
