Sony Unveils the World's Smallest And Lightest High-Definition Camcorder(1) in its New Line of HD Models

Four New Camcorders Record Full HD 1080 Video on Memory Stick Media and
    Hard Disk Drives

TORONTO, April 25 /CNW/ - Sony is bolstering its lead in the
high-definition camcorder industry with the introduction of its new AVCHD(TM)
technology-based models.
First off the block is the HDR-CX7 model, the world's smallest and
lightest AVCHD high-definition camcorder, which can record nearly three hours
of Full HD 1080 video on an 8 GB Memory Stick PRO Duo(TM) media card (LP
mode). Weighing just 15 ounces with the supplied battery, the Sony HDR-CX7 is
ultra-portable, has a virtually crash-proof recording system, offers instant
archiving to Memory Stick PRO Duo media (sold separately), and effortlessly
connects to a PC via USB for editing and back-up.
The SR series welcomes three new models to the Canadian marketplace, the
HDR-SR8, HDR-SR7 and HDR-SR5, each offering substantial hard drive support. At
the top of the line is the HDR-SR8, an AVCHD high-definition camcorder with
more than 38 hours of Full HD 1080 video recording time thanks to a 100GB hard
disk drive. The HDR-SR7 is equipped with a 60GB built-in hard disk drive and
offers over 22 hours of Full HD record time, while the HDR-SR5 camcorder is
equipped with a 40GB hard disk drive that can hold more than 15 hours of
footage (LP modes). In addition to long recording times, the SR series offers
compactness, Sony's HDD Smart Protection(TM) system to safeguard against data
loss, and easy connection to PCs via USB.
"Customers are quickly embracing non-linear camcorder formats, such as
hard disk drive and flash media, because they make it easy for anyone to view
and access footage quickly," said Mio Ozawa, Product Manager for Camcorders.
"Sony offers the added advantages of superior high-definition picture quality
and the widest range of high-definition models, ensuring we satisfy the needs
of virtually every type of customer."

    Advanced Browse and Search Functions

The new camcorders debut enhanced functions for easy browsing and
searching on high-resolution, 2.7-inch Clear Photo LCD plus(TM) screens.
Scenes can swiftly and easily be found using a new Film-Roll Index button that
displays multiple scenes as thumbnails within a single movie file. Sony also
integrated scene selection using a new face index technology.
For more advanced searching on a compatible PC, the camcorders' bundled
software, Picture Motion Browser(TM), can access the Highlight Index feature
which incorporates a search engine for voices, colors and faces - ensuring
quick access of highlight scenes.

    Picture Quality Like No Other

The new models incorporate Sony's ClearVid CMOS sensor(TM) technology for
stunning detail and clarity. Combined with the Enhanced Imaging Processor(TM),
these models deliver the advantages of high resolution, high sensitivity with
low noise, and virtually smear-free pictures.
    The HDR-CX7, HDR-SR8 and HDR-SR7 models utilize Sony's 3-megapixel sensor
for Full HD 1080 video and 6-megapixel digital still photos. All three models
are also equipped with Super SteadyShot(R) Optical image stabilization to
ensure smooth video results as well as virtually blur-free photos. The HDR-SR5
camcorder integrates a 2-megapixel sensor for Full HD 1080 video and produces
a 4-megapixel photo. Additionally, all models benefit from Carl Zeiss(R)
Vario-Sonnar(R) T(*) optics for increased contrast and true-to-life color
saturation.
With Sony's x.v.Color(TM) technology, based on the new international
xvYCC color standard, the new camcorders reproduce a much wider data range of
colors than the conventional sRGB standard. When connected to a compatible
HDTV via the camcorders' HDMI(TM) outputs, home videos sparkle with vivid,
natural-looking results.
The new models support the AVCHD camcorder recording format based on the
MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 codec for video compression and Dolby(R) digital audio. In
addition to high-quality video the new models also provide an exceptional
audio experience with built-in Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound
recording.

A Full World of Editing and Playback Solutions

These new high definition camcorders allow for quick data transfer from
the camcorder to a compatible PC for editing, back-up and playback. Although
bundled with software for simple editing, these camcorders are also compatible
with the new Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition 7.0e software update, as
well as Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition software for more advanced
editors that will be available in July.
The supplied Handycam Station includes a One Touch Disc Burn button for
easy DVD creation using a PC and the bundled software, and an HD component
output for instant connection to an HDTV when the camcorders are cradled.
High-definition content recorded on standard DVDs can be played back on
Blu-ray Disc devices, PLAYSTATION(R)3 game consoles as well as standard DVD
drives on compatible PCs with the models' bundled software. Next-generation
Sony DVDirect(R) recorders will also be compatible with these new models for
creation of standard, 12cm DVDs. The HDR-CX7 unit's Memory Stick PRO Duo or
Memory Stick PRO HG(TM) media cards, featuring high data transfer rates, can
also be played back on compatible PCs and updated compatible PLAYSTATION(R)3
game consoles.

$1699.99 respectively. The HDR-SR7 and HDR-SR5 will be available in June at
an MSRP of $1499.99 and $1299.99 respectively.
