Construction to begin early September
STELLARTON, NS, Aug. 16 /CNW/ - For 103 years, Sobeys has built and renewed its assets in Pictou County, Nova Scotia and across the country. This commitment continues with the announcement of plans to begin construction of a new replacement head office building at 116 King Street in Stellarton.
Totaling approximately 55,000 sq. ft over three floors, the new office building will be built on land immediately north of Empire Company Limited's office on the west side of King Street. The building will continue to house a number of the company's senior executives as well as national finance, human resources, legal and loss prevention personnel who support and administer the company's operations across Canada.
The new facility will replace Sobeys' existing head office at 115 King Street which has been the company's headquarters since 1946.
"Originally built as a food warehouse in the 1930's, our King Street office has served us well for more than 60 years," said Bill McEwan, President & CEO of Sobeys Inc. "And now we must replace our legacy building with the contemporary office space we require to operate our business today and into the future, ensuring that we provide an appropriate, productive and pleasant work environment for our employees."
Notable architectural features of the new building include more efficient space allocation, improved meeting and teleconferencing facilities, energy efficient natural lighting, and solar hot water technology and heat reflective roofing to reduce the reliance on air conditioning in summer months.
For key design and general contracting services, Sobeys has awarded contracts with the following Nova Scotia firms, including:
- Architect: Anwyll Fogo Architects & interior Ltd.
- Structural Consultant: Campbell Comeau Engineering Ltd
- Mechanical & Electrical Consultant: F.C. O'Neill, Scriven & Associates Ltd.
- Civil Consultant: MEC Engineering & Construction Services Ltd
- Landscape Architect: Ekistics Planning & Design
Construction of the new headquarters is expected to commence early September 2010 and be completed by September 2011. At this time, the current head office building will be demolished and converted to a parking lot to accommodate Sobeys Inc. and Empire Company Limited employees. During construction, vehicles travelling east will be required to turn either north or south at Mackay Street.
