TORONTO, Dec. 12 /CNW Telbec/ - SNC-Lavalin has been awarded a lump-sum
engineering and procurement contract by Kazzinc JSC (a division of Glencore)
for a new sulphuric acid plant, which will be an integral part of Kazzinc's
new copper smelter in Ust-Kamenogorsk in eastern Kazakhstan. The contract is
valued at over CAN $60 million (approximately (euro)42 million).
Using MECS (formerly Monsanto Environmental Chem Systems) technology, the
acid plant will capture sulphur dioxide (SO2) created during the copper
smelting process for use in its own production processes, thereby reducing SO2
gas emissions in compliance with the local Clean Air Act.
Work is set to start immediately, and the plant is scheduled to go into
commercial operation in late 2009.
"We worked with Glencore on the Mopani copper mine modernization project
in Zambia recently, and are pleased to be working with them again in
Kazakhstan," said Vulcan Mutler, President of Fenco, a division of SNC-Lavalin
Engineers & Constructors Inc. "We see a wide range of opportunities in many of
our industry sectors in Kazakhstan and throughout Eurasia."
