TORONTO, March 28 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
continuing to probe the circumstances of a police shooting involving officers
from the Toronto Police Service (TPS). The shooting occurred at approximately
8:46 a.m. today at an apartment building at 3460 Keele St.
The SIU was notified that TPS officers were called to the apartment
building in response to a domestic dispute. Officers arrived at the apartment
and became involved in a confrontation with a man, resulting in the man being
fatally shot. The man's identity is not being released as his next of kin have
not been notified.
A post mortem examination will be conducted on March 29.
During the incident, the man's spouse was also injured. She is currently
being treated in hospital. The two were visiting the apartment in which the
incident occurred and were not tenants.
SIU investigators are independently examining the circumstances of the
police shooting. As part of the SIU probe, investigators have designated one
subject officer and seven witness officers from the TPS. Interviews with
police and civilian witnesses are ongoing and the scene continues to be
processed by the SIU. Additionally, the involved officer's firearm has been
seized for examination.
No further information will be released on this investigation today in
order to protect the integrity of the SIU's investigation.
The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving
police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or
death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director
of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are
warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's
decision is reported to the Attorney General.
