TORONTO, Dec. 2 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
continuing to examine the circumstances of a police shooting, involving
officers from the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS).
On December 1, at about 2:33 a.m., HRPS officers were involved in a
confrontation with 38-year-old Steve Remian at Wedgewood Park in Oakville. It
has now been determined that three officers, not four, fired their guns.
Mr. Remian was fatally injured and died at the scene.
As part of the investigation, SIU investigators are attending an autopsy
that is ongoing. The SIU will be re-designating one of the subject officers to
a witness officer now that it has been determined that three officers fired.
The subject officers' firearms and uniforms have been taken for examination
and a rifle, which was recovered from the shooting scene, will also be
examined. Interviews with witnesses are continuing and SIU investigators are
appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or has any relevant
information to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529 x 1965 or 416-622-1965.
The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving
police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or
death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director
of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are
warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's
decision is reported to the Attorney General.
