SIU Updates Hamilton Shooting Investigation



    TORONTO, April 6 /CNW/ - Ten investigators from the Special
Investigations Unit (SIU) are continuing to examine the circumstances of the
fatal police shooting of a 46-year-old Hamilton man.
    Shortly after 2:00 a.m. this morning, Hamilton Police Service (HPS)
officers responded to an emergency call for assistance from the owner of M&J
Billiards and Video at 225 Parkdale Avenue North. Two officers were involved
in a confrontation with a man outside of the store and fired their guns. As a
result, the man was fatally struck. His identity is not being released at this
time.
    No one else involved in this incident was seriously injured.
    The SIU has designated two subject officers and four witness officers
from the HPS. SIU investigators are continuing to conduct interviews and are
also appealing to anyone who witnessed this incident or who has any
information to contact the Unit at 416-622-1965 or 1-800-787-8529 x1965.

    The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving
police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or
death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director
of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are
warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's
decision is reported to the Attorney General.
