TORONTO, Jan. 16 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting
of a man by the London Police Service (LPS) yesterday afternoon (January 15,
On Thursday January 15, 2009 seven investigators and four forensic
investigators from the SIU responded to London to probe the actions of the LPS
in the shooting of 26-year-old Joseph Arthur Barnes of London. Investigation
to this point has determined that Mr. Barnes sustained gunshot wounds during
his interaction with officers of the LPS.
Mr. Barnes was transported to Victoria Hospital in London where he
underwent surgery. He is presently in stable condition and under police guard
at the hospital.
SIU investigators will be back in the Oakville Avenue area today to
continue the investigation. They will be conducting witness interviews and
identifying any other members of the public that may have witnessed what

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
