SIU Investigates Vehicle Collision in Peterborough



    TORONTO, Aug. 16 /CNW/ - The Peterborough Lakefield Community Police
Service contacted the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) at 0047 hrs this date
to report a personal injury motor vehicle collision involving one of their
police cruisers and a male person on a bicycle. The collision occurred at 0025
hrs at King and Rubidge Streets in Peterborough. The cyclist was taken to
Peterborough Regional Health Centre with head injuries. His condition is
described as serious but stable.
    The SIU is probing the circumstances surrounding the incident and has
sent four Investigators and two Forensic Identification Investigators to
Peterborough.
    The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact

    The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
