TORONTO, Nov. 1 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting of a man in Toronto
park by a Toronto Police Service (TPS) officer yesterday evening.
The TPS advised the SIU that at 9:30 p.m., Wednesday October 31, 2007,
two uniformed officers came across what appeared to be a robbery in progress
in Riverdale Park. The officers moved in to arrest two parties. One of the
parties became involved in an altercation with one of the officers, which
resulted in the party being shot.
The party was taken to hospital by ambulance where he later succumbed to
This investigation is in its preliminary stages therefore there is no
additional information available at this time.
The SIU has assigned six field investigators and four forensic
technicians to investigate the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is a civilian government agency that investigates circumstances
involving police and civilians, which have resulted in serious injury or
death. Under Section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU
has the authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the
