MISSISSAUGA, ON, April 22 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU)
is probing the circumstances surrounding the shooting of man by the Ottawa
Police Service (OPS) early this evening.
The OPS contacted the SIU at 6:39 p.m. today and reported that at 5:30
p.m. members of the OPS pursued a vehicle on Highway 417 in regards to a
criminal investigation. The vehicle was stopped at Highway 417 and Walkley
Road. Three officers interacted with a man who got out of the car. During this
interaction an officer fired at least one shot and the man was struck.
The man was taken to hospital.
The SIU has four investigators and three forensic investigators en route
to Ottawa to probe the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
