TORONTO, Dec. 1 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has
assigned a team of investigators and forensic identification technicians to
probe a police shooting that occurred earlier this morning, involving officers
from the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS).
At approximately 1:34 a.m. this morning, the HRPS received a 911 call
about a man who was behaving strangely and possibly armed with a gun at a
Tim Hortons coffee shop on Trafalgar Road in Oakville. Officers responded and
found the man had left in a car. The police gathered information about the car
and the license plate and started to investigate.
Two officers saw the car at Cairncroft and Lakeshore Roads and started to
follow it. Additional officers joined in and followed the car to a park off
Weaver Avenue. The man got out of the car and was involved in a confrontation
with the officers. At approximately 2:33 a.m., shots were fired by the police
and the man was struck. He suffered fatal wounds and died at the scene.
The man's identity is not confirmed at this time.
SIU forensic identification technicians are processing the shooting scene
and collecting evidence. Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed
the incident or has any relevant information to contact the SIU at

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving
police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or
death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director
of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are
warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's
decision is reported to the Attorney General.
