TORONTO, March 25 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has
assigned five investigators and four forensic investigators to probe a police
shooting that occurred in east Toronto this afternoon.
At 3:52 p.m. today the Toronto Police Service (TPS) advised the SIU that
a number of TPS officers responded to an alleged robbery at 3:15 p.m. at a
Royal Bank branch located on Sheppard Ave. west of Markham Rd.
The officers were on scene when a man left the bank holding something in
each hand. The man interacted with officers that were on the scene. During
this interaction an officer discharged his firearm. The man was struck by at
least one bullet and collapsed on the ground.
The man was taken to Sunnybrook hospital by ambulance. His injuries are
considered life threatening.
The man's identity is not known at this time.
The SIU has designated one TPS officer as a subject officer and eight as

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
