TORONTO, Feb. 12 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing
the circumstances surrounding the shooting of a man by the Hamilton Police
Service (HPS) earlier today.
The HPS contacted the SIU at 5:14 p.m. The HPS advised that just before
5:00 p.m. officers had interaction with an 18 year old male on James Street
North, Hamilton. During the interaction an officer fired at least one shot and
the man was struck.
The man was transported to Hamilton General Hospital.
The SIU has assigned six investigators and three forensic investigators
to probe the circumstances surrounding this incident. Investigators are
appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact the Unit

There is no other information to release at this time.
The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
