TORONTO, March 29 /CNW/ - Investigators from the Special Investigations
Unit (SIU) have been dispatched to investigate a police shooting that occurred
this afternoon in the Community of Phelpston in Springwater Township.
As a result, a 43-year-old man sustained very serious gunshot wounds and
is currently being treated at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) notified the SIU that at around
3:00 p.m. today, OPP officers responded to a domestic dispute call at a
residence on Phelpston Road and confronted the male individual. It was
reported that there was a confrontation between the man and the officers,
resulting in one officer discharging his gun. The man was struck in the
abdomen area and transported to Royal Victoria Hospital and then to Sunnybrook
Health Sciences Centre where he is in critical condition.
Three investigators and three forensic identification technicians have
been assigned to the case. The scene has been secured for forensic processing
by the SIU and investigators will be embarking on interviews with witnesses.
The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving
police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or
death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director
of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are
warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's
decision is reported to the Attorney General.
