SIU Investigates Incident in Schreiber OPP Area

TORONTO, Jan. 23 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing
the circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle collision west of Schreiber
early this morning.
At 5:55 a.m. today, the Ontario Provincial Police - Schreiber Detachment
(OPP) contacted the SIU. The OPP reported that at 3:00 a.m. this morning, one
of their officers stopped a vehicle on Hwy. 17 west of Schreiber. The male
driver exited the vehicle, as did the OPP officer. The male then got back into
his vehicle and fled eastbound on Highway 17. The OPP officer pursued the
vehicle and eventually lost sight of it. The officer subsequently located the
vehicle. It had left the roadway, entered a ditch and rolled over. The driver
sustained injuries in the collision.
The male driver was taken to Schreiber Hospital and treated. He was then
transferred to hospital in Thunder Bay for a further assessment. As a result
of this further assessment, the SIU has invoked its mandate.
The SIU has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to
probe the circumstances surrounding this incident.
Investigators are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this
incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-1965 or 1-800-787-8529 extension No.
1965.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
