MISSISSAUGA, ON, Sept. 3 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
probing the circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle collision in Hamilton
early this morning.
At 5:20 a.m. today, the Hamilton Police Service (HPS) contacted the SIU.
They reported that at 3:21 a.m. this morning, one of their officers intended
to stop a vehicle for a traffic offence. The vehicle did not stop. A short
time later, the officer located the vehicle at Garth Street and Beckett Drive.
The vehicle had crashed into a stone wall.
The 24-year old male driver was taken to Hamilton General Hospital for
treatment of suspected fractures.
The SIU has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigator to
probe the circumstances surrounding this incident.
Investigators are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
