TORONTO, June 23 /CNW/ - Eight investigators, including four forensic
investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the
circumstances surrounding a police shooting involving the Ontario Provincial
Police (OPP) Huronia West Detachment.
The SIU was notified that on Monday June 22, 2009 at approximately
8:30 PM the OPP were called to a home in Elmvale. When the officer arrived
there was an interaction between him and an occupant of the home. The officer
discharged his firearm at least once. A 59 year old man was taken to Royal
Victoria Hospital in Barrie where he was pronounced dead.
A post mortem will be conducted tomorrow at the Centre of Forensic
Sciences in Toronto.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
