TORONTO, Feb. 17 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing
the circumstances of a fatal police shooting involving the Toronto Police
Service (TPS). The shooting occurred shortly before 8:30 p.m. yesterday
evening in Oriole Park, in the area of Frobisher Ave. and Lascelles Blvd.
The SIU was notified that TPS officers were dispatched to the area of the
Davisville subway station to investigate reports of a robbery. Two uniformed
officers located a 28-year-old man in Oriole Park. A confrontation ensued
between the man and the officers, resulting in the man being shot. He was
taken to St. Michael's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Six SIU investigators and four SIU forensic investigators have been
assigned to independently probe the nature and extent of TPS involvement in
the man's death. Investigators have designated two TPS officers as subject
officers and six as witness officers. Items of evidentiary interest have been
seized by the SIU and interviews with witnesses are ongoing.
A post mortem examination will take place on Monday, February 18, 2008.
As the deceased's next of kin have not yet been notified, the SIU will not be
releasing his identity at this time.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
