SIU Investigates Death in Dutton

TORONTO, June 28 /CNW/ - Eight investigators from the Special
Investigations Unit (SIU) are investigating the circumstances of a collision
that has left a 22-year-old Kitchener man dead.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) notified the SIU that at
approximately 10:00 a.m. today, OPP officers were at the scene of a single
tractor-trailer roll over on Highway 401, east of Currie Road. The
tractor-trailer was being towed along the south shoulder of the eastbound
lanes as officers in marked cruisers escorted the convoy. In the meantime, the
driver of a tractor-trailer passed the police convoy and collided into the
rear of another tractor-trailer. The driver of the first tractor-trailer
suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
SIU investigators are probing the nature and extent of police involvement
in all the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. The highway has been
re-opened.

The SIU is a civilian government agency that investigates circumstances
involving police and civilians, which have resulted in serious injury or
death. Under Section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU
has the authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the
findings of an investigation. The Director's decision is reported to the
Attorney General.
