TORONTO, May 23 /CNW/ - The Waterloo Regional Police Service contacted
the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) earlier this morning regarding an
investigation they were conducting in Kitchener. They reported that they
responded to a disturbance on Union Street at 0345 AM. While there they
interacted with a male in an apartment. The male was taken to hospital. The
Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the
incident and has sent four Investigators and two Forensic Identification
Investigators to Kitchener.
The investigation is in the early stages and interviews are being
conducted at this time.
The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
