TORONTO, June 24 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
investigating the circumstances surrounding the in-custody death of a man in
Members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call at
approximately 10:30 a.m. on Monday June 23, 2008 about a suspicious person on
Front Street in Norfolk. During the altercation at the intersection of Front
Street and Fishers Glen Road, Mr. Marreel was tasered by police and taken to
the Simcoe OPP Detachment for further investigation. He went into medical
distress and was taken to Norfolk General Hospital where he was pronounced
The deceased has been identified as 36-year-old Jeffrey Mark Marreel of
no fixed address.
The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
