SIU Investigates Collision in Kitchener



    TORONTO, March 23 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
investigating the circumstances surrounding a collision that occurred on
Bleams Road near Otanabee Drive, Kitchener.
    The SIU was notified that on Sunday, March 23rd, 2008 at approximately
4:45 a.m., a Waterloo Regional Police Service officer was investigating an
older gray Chrysler Minivan on Bleams Road. The van left the roadway near
Otanabee Drive and rolled over. A 29 year old male occupant of the vehicle was
taken to hospital and treated for multiple fractures.
    The SIU has sent five investigators, three forensic investigators and a
collision reconstructionist to Kitchener to probe the nature and extent of
police involvement in the events leading up to the collision.
    The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact

    The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving
police and civilians, which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or
death. Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director
of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are
warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director's
decision is reported to the Attorney General.
