SIU Investigates Collision in Belleville Involving the Ontario Provincial Police



    TORONTO, July 11 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
investigating the circumstances surrounding a collision between an Ontario
Provincial Police (OPP) cruiser and a civilian vehicle north of Belleville.
    The collision took place Friday July 11, 2008 at approximately 9:30 a.m.
at the intersection of Highway 62 and Country Road 14.
    A female passenger in the civilian vehicle suffered a fractured knee; the
driver of the vehicle and the OPP officer driving the marked cruiser were also
treated in hospital for their injuries. None of the injuries is considered
life threatening.
    The SIU has assigned four field investigators and two forensic
investigators to this case.
    The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact

    The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
