TORONTO, Dec. 24 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
continuing its investigation into the injury sustained by a 17-year-old
Toronto male on December 21, 2007.
At 8:45 p.m. the Toronto Police Service (TPS) was called to a Shoppers
Drug Mart on Keele St. in response to a robbery in progress. A male fled the
scene prior to the police arriving. He was later located by a member of the
TPS in a laneway in the area of Keele St. south of St. Clair. During his
interaction with the officer he was shot. The male was taken to hospital with
non-life threatening injuries.
The SIU has assigned four field investigators and three forensic
identification technicians to probe the circumstances surrounding this

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
