TORONTO, Feb. 4 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing
the circumstances surrounding the shooting of a man by the Midland Police
The SIU is continuing its investigation into an incident that occurred in
Midland yesterday just before 5:00 p.m. SIU investigators have determined that
four MPS officers went to a home on Scott Street to investigate the
circumstances of a 9-1-1 call. Three officers entered the home and were
confronted by a man. There was interaction between this man and the officers
inside the house. Two officers and the man went outside into the driveway. The
interaction continued and an officer discharged his firearm once at the man.
The man was struck by the shot.
38-year-old Douglas Heagle of Midland was transported to Huronia Hospital
in Midland by ambulance. Mr. Heagle later succumbed to his injuries.
The SIU has designated one officer as a subject officer and three
officers as witness officers.
The SIU has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to
probe the circumstances surrounding this incident. Investigators are appealing
for anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
