TORONTO, Dec. 24 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
continuing its investigation into the death of a 47-year-old Toronto man on
December 22, 2007.
At 10:33 a.m. the Toronto Police Service (TPS) was called to
Vanderbrent Cr. in regards to a man damaging property. The man fled the area
on foot prior to the police arriving. Officers determined that the man had
gone to a 16th floor apartment on Redgrave Dr. The Emergency Task Force (ETF)
responded to the building to assist the officers that were already there. The
police were unable to contact the man. At 12:52 p.m. ETF officers entered the
apartment. Around the same time the body of a man was located on the ground
outside of the building.
The SIU has assigned two field investigators and two forensic
identification technicians to probe the circumstances surrounding this

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
