SIU Continues Investigation in Toronto

TORONTO, March 12 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
continuing to probe the circumstances of a fatal shooting that occurred on
March 8, 2008 involving the Toronto Police Service (TPS).
David Fetterly, 42 years of age, of Toronto, was fatally shot during a
physical altercation with a TPS officer inside a pharmacy at the corner of
Garden Avenue and Roncesvalles Avenue.
As part of their investigation, the SIU has designated one subject and
seven witness officers from the TPS. Seven SIU investigators, including three
forensic investigators, have been assigned to investigate the nature and
extent of TPS involvement in this fatal shooting. SIU investigators have now
canvassed the area surrounding the pharmacy and have interviewed civilian
witnesses.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
