TORONTO, Oct. 17 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
appealing for witnesses to an incident involving officers of the Waterloo
Regional Police Service during Octoberfest celebrations in Kitchener.
On Sunday October 12, 2008 between 12:15 a.m. and 12:30 a.m., security
staff at the Queensmount Arena at 1650 Queens Blvd. ejected a man who had been
involved in an altercation with two other patrons. When police arrived to
arrest the man, a struggle ensued and he was handcuffed and taken into
custody. The 25-year-old Cambridge man was charged with public intoxication.
The SIU is investigating the circumstances surrounding injuries sustained
by this man. Anyone, who may have witnessed these events - both inside and
outside the Queensmount Arena - or has any information about the incidents, to

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
