TORONTO, Feb. 28 /CNW/ - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is
presently investigating an incident that occurred just before midnight on
February 19, 2008. Officers of the York Regional Police Service (YRPS) pulled
over a car that had been travelling southbound on Highway 400 just south of
the Kirby Sideroad in Vaughan.
When the car stopped a man got out of the car and ran eastbound across
the southbound lanes, through the median, across the northbound lanes and up
an embankment. YRPS officers gave chase and caught up to the man. The man was
taken into custody for an alleged criminal offence. YRPS officers took the man
back across the highway to the west side where the car he had been in was
SIU investigators are interested in speaking with anyone who may have
witnessed all or part of this incident.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates cases of serious injuries
(including allegations of sexual assault) and deaths involving the police.
Pursuant to section 113 of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU is
mandated to consider whether a criminal offence has been committed by an
officer(s) in connection with the incident under investigation and, where
warranted by the evidence, to cause a criminal charge or charges to be laid
against the officer(s). The Director reports the results of investigations to
the Attorney General.
