Serving Men as Victims of Sexual Abuse Key to a Safer, Stronger Ontario: Recommendation to Cornwall Inquiry Essential for Social Well Being, says The Men's Project

OTTAWA, Feb. 26 /CNW Telbec/ - The Men's Project will present its fifteen
recommendations to Commissioner Glaude on Friday, February 27th from 11:00
a.m. to 11:30 a.m., as part of its final Submission to Part 2 of the Cornwall
Inquiry.
Many of its recommendations call for the end of a provincial policy that
only funds women's services for sexual abuse recovery. In its stead, The Men's
Project calls for the creation of a parallel province-wide network of agencies
to address the needs of male survivors of sexual trauma.
Addressing the needs of the 1 in 6 males who have been sexually abused as
children, it says that it is imperative that the Ministry of the Attorney
General and other Ontario Ministries end its "gendered" lens of specialized
victim treatment services.
The Men's Project is the only sexual abuse treatment centre for men
funded by the province, as compared to the 39 sexual assault centres that are
funded to serve women. As a non-profit agency, The Men's Project provides
services in Ottawa and Cornwall. It has been funded by the Attorney General's
office for ten years.
Other recommendations speak to the need for provincial public education
and professional training campaigns, the involvement of the Ministry of Health
to fund these services, and a provincial ombudsman for victims of sexual
violence.
