The Relay to End Kids Cancer
TORONTO, Sept. 22, 2011 /CNW/ - Sears Canada is calling on all Ontario residents to lace up for a new
challenge - The Sears Great Canadian Run. On September 24, 2011, relay
teams of up to 20 people each are invited to join hundreds of Canadians
on a full-day running adventure from Toronto to Blue Mountain.
Proceeds from The Run will support pediatric oncology initiatives at
The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).
The Toronto to Blue Mountain Run on September 24, 2011, is the second of
three Sears Great Canadian Runs taking place in 2011 and offers 101 km
and 131 km distance options. Other events include the Squamish to
Whistler Run, which was held on August 27 in British Columbia, and the
Ottawa to Montebello Run taking place on October 15. Teams will have
the opportunity to create their own strategy to manage the course by
taking turns throughout the day. Each leg ranges from 4 km to 12 km in
"The Sears Great Canadian run supports a cause that is important to our
associates and customers in communities across the country," said
Calvin McDonald, President and CEO, Sears Canada Inc. "The Sears Great
Canadian Run gives Canadians - runners and non-runners alike - a great
reason to team up for a cause that affects thousands of children and
families who are going through very challenging times."
The Sears Great Canadian Run will raise funds for the Sears Canada
Charitable Foundation. Half of the donations made by the Foundation
will benefit local pediatric oncology hospitals and organizations in
the cities where The Run takes place. The remainder will benefit
national pediatric oncology research initiatives such as The Sears
Childhood Cancer Fellowship at SickKids.
In support if children's cancer, Sears has been title sponsor of events
that have raised over $4.3 million for the cause since 2008. In 2010,
Sears Canada Charitable Foundation made a multi-year, $5 million
commitment to SickKids, which sees 25% of all new cases of pediatric
cancer in Canada and 60% of all cases in Ontario. The financial
commitment is being directed towards the completion of a
state-of-the-art cancer clinic and half to support The Sears Childhood
"When a child is diagnosed with cancer, an entire family embarks on a
daunting journey," said Mary Jo Haddad, President & CEO, SickKids.
"Approximately 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, and
many of those children will come through SickKids' doors. We are
grateful to Sears Canada and its employees for their generous support
of the Sears Cancer Clinic, a place where high-quality treatment,
pioneering research and a cheerful and accommodating physical
environment come together to provide our young patients and their
families with healing, comfort and hope,"
