Sears Canada Receives ENERGY STAR Retailer of the Year Award for Second Consecutive Year

    TORONTO, June 17 /CNW/ - Sears Canada Inc. (TSX: SCC) announced today
that it has won the 2009 ENERGY STAR(R) Retailer of the Year award, the second
year in a row it has done so. Since the ENERGY STAR Market Transformation
Awards were first presented in 2003, Sears has won the coveted "Retailer of
the Year" award three times, including the inaugural year along with 2008 and
2009.
    "We are very proud and honoured to have been awarded the 2009 ENERGY STAR
Retailer of the Year award", said Dene Rogers, President and Chief Executive
Officer, Sears Canada. "Our Company has been focused on expanding our
selection of qualifying products over the past two years, to help Canadians
become more energy efficient in the choices they make. As well as selling home
appliances and electronics, Sears offers a broad range of high-efficiency
furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, windows, doors and tankless water
heaters designed to use less energy and be more economical for our customers."
    In acknowledging Sears for its achievement, Mark Warawa, Parliamentary
Secretary to the Minister of the Environment, said "I congratulate Sears for
their creativity, innovation and leadership in helping to strengthen and
expand the ENERGY STAR program in Canada. Companies like Sears are advancing
our economy by promoting and developing new energy-efficient technologies,
which will improve Canada now and in the future."
    To qualify for ENERGY STAR designation, products must meet stringent
specifications for energy efficiency and, depending on the product, be
10-to-50 percent more efficient than conventional products. The ENERGY STAR
program builds on the Government of Canada's plan to fight climate change,
which sets a course to achieve an absolute reduction of 20 percent in Canada's
greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.
    In recognizing Sears, Natural Resources Canada noted that ENERGY
STAR-qualified products often figure prominently in weekly Sears flyers
distributed to households across Canada. The Company also collaborates with
utilities and other partners to ensure that consumers know about and take
advantage of rebate offers. For example, in 2008 Sears collaborated with BC
Hydro to promote ENERGY STAR-qualified products during Power Smart Month.
Sears Canada also supports the Ontario Power Authority's "Every Kilowatt
Counts" campaign, which promotes the purchase of ENERGY STAR-qualified
products.
    As a partner in the ecoENERGY Retrofit - Homes initiative, Sears Canada
will rebate $150 of the cost of a home energy evaluation in the form of a
credit toward the purchase of ENERGY STAR-qualified products.
