Search is on for Canadian rugby anthem

weneedasong.ca launches in preparation for Rugby World Cup

    TORONTO, June 4 /CNW/ - Canada's national men's rugby team has almost
everything going for it: talent, grit, determination and a berth in the Rugby
World Cup, set for this summer in France.
There's just one thing missing: a song.
"Canada's Rugby Nation needs an anthem to call its own," said Gareth
Rees, Canada's all-time leading scorer in international rugby competition and
spokesperson for weneedasong.ca. "As a player, there is nothing like the power
and emotion of your song before a match, it is a rush of adrenaline. Every
major rugby nation has a song, now it's time for Canadian to lay claim to our
own."
All of the world's great rugby nations have an anthem which they have
adopted as their battle cry. At international matches, stadiums literally
shake as the voices of thousands of ardent supporters join together as one, to
strike fear in the hearts of their opponents and to rally their country's team
on toward victory.
For New Zealand, it's the commanding and fierce "haka" a traditional
Maori Dance that is thought to call a warrior's spirit to battle. Scottish
rugby fans belt out "Flower of Scotland," an unofficial national anthem. And
supporters of the emerald isle's national team sing "Ireland's Call," a
national sports anthem.
"To have fifteen of the nation's top rugby players bound together and
singing their song along with their fans is an unmatched rush and can make the
difference between winning and losing. With a great Canadian rugby anthem, the
other side's silence will resonate," Rees added. "With the World Cup in
September and our recent win over the United States, we need a song."
Guinness Draught, the official beer of Rugby Canada, is sponsoring the
search for Canada's national rugby anthem.
"This is a call to action for rugby fans across this country, give us the
song that powers Team Canada to glory at the World Cup," said Rees. Interested
entrants can upload their audio and video files, as well as submit suggested
song lyrics at weneedasong.ca. The contest runs until June 25, 2007. Finalists
will be chosen by July 30, 2007, with Team Canada selecting the winner. The
winning song will make the journey with the team to the World Cup. The winner
and a guest win a trip to a major international rugby game overseas. All
contest details available at www.weneedasong.ca.
