TORONTO, Oct. 30 /CNW/ - Score Media Inc. (TSX: SCR) today announced that
it is pleased with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications
Commission's (CRTC) new policies which prepare the Canadian broadcasting
industry for the transition to a fully digital environment.
The Commission today set out its determinations regarding its review of
the regulatory frameworks for broadcasting distribution undertakings (BDUs)
and discretionary programming services in Broadcasting Public Notice CRTC
"From our perspective we got everything we had hoped for," says John
Levy, Chairman and CEO, Score Media Inc. "The Commission's decision to retain
its one-to-a-genre policy and guaranteed access ensures that independent
voices like The Score will have the opportunity to continue to innovate and
thrive in this new digital world."
Specifically, the Commission has determined that with the exception of
mainstream sports and mainstream national news services, existing analog and
Category 1 digital specialty services will retain genre exclusivity and
guaranteed access to broadcast distribution undertakings. The Commission has
also determined that The Score is not one of the mainstream sports services
whose genre has been opened up to direct competition.
In addition, the Commission has loosened certain rules relating to the
programming categories that services can air such as documentaries, music
videos, animated programming and movies, allowing The Score to be even more
creative in its programming.
"Today's decision affirms the Commission's commitment to a strong and
diverse Canadian broadcasting system," says Levy.
