School crossing guards in Rouyn-Noranda - Five years / 26.5% increase

    ROUYN-NORANDA, QC, June 2 /CNW Telbec/ - Yesterday, the 14 school
crossing guards in Rouyn-Noranda accepted a new five-year collective agreement
by a vote of 100%. They will receive wage increases in the order of 26.5%. "We
had some catching up to do. The employer had to budge. It was not easy, but we
have made progress. That is what we need to remember about these
negotiations," declared Marc Thibodeau, Staff Representative of the United
Steelworkers (FTQ).
The wage increases will be 5% retroactive to January 2009, with a 5.5%
adjustment in May 2009. Starting in January 2010 they will be 5%, and 3% for
each of the last three years of the labour agreement. The average hourly wage
was $8.57.
The United Steelworkers (FTQ) also succeeded in improving the vacation
plan, the work clothes bonus and the number of hours of union leave. Finally,
it won the creation of a health and safety committee and a labour relations
committee.
