KIRKLAND, QC, March 7 /CNW Telbec/ - By the end of this year, the
landscape along the Trans-Canada Highway in the West Island of Montreal will
have changed following Schering-Plough Canada's announcement that it will move
to a new head office.
"The need for a new head office is the result of our company's employee
expansion over the last five years. Our commitment of $18.5 million over a
15-year lease for this head office clearly demonstrates the importance of our
ongoing relationship with Quebec and Montreal, our home for more than 80
years," said Carlos Dourado, President and General Manager of Schering-Plough
Schering-Plough employs more than 850 people in Canada. Further, the
company expects to hire up to 40 new employees for managerial and other key
roles across the country in the next few months.
Participating in today's announcement with Mr. Dourado were Quebec's
Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade, Mr. Raymond
Bachand; Quebec Minister and MNA for Jacques Cartier, Mr. Geoffrey Kelley;
West Island MNA's Yolande James and Pierre Marsan, as well as Kirkland Mayor
John Meaney, who opened the doors of his Town Hall for this occasion.
Minister Bachand reaffirmed the importance of Schering-Plough's
relationship to the area: "Schering-Plough's roots run deep here," he stated.
"Your commitment is clear proof of your confidence in the role that
Quebec-based pharmaceuticals can play on the Canadian scene."
Mr. Dourado seconded the Minister's remarks by saying he wanted "to thank
Mr. Bachand and his colleague, Dr. Philippe Couillard, Minister of Health and
Social services, for having worked with all healthcare stakeholders to adopt a
new drug policy which creates a favorable investment climate in Quebec." He
also thanked the Federal government for having recently improved data
protection for drug products.
Mr. Dourado also stated, "We have recently changed our corporate name
from Schering Canada to Schering-Plough Canada, in line with our global
company's name. We look forward to putting our new name on the new building."
The new multi-level 80,000 square foot building, to be located in
Kirkland on the Trans-Canada Highway, will be built by Broccolini Construction
Inc. and leased to Schering-Plough Canada.
Schering-Plough's state-of-the-art Manufacturing Operation, which
produces 300 million tablets for international and domestic markets, is
located at 3535 Trans-Canada Highway, in Pointe Claire. The company also has
a state-of-the-art Distribution Centre located in Kirkland. The new Head
Office announced today will constitute the third Schering-Plough building in
the West Island of Montreal.
